The facade of Carson Pirie Scott & Co, originally The Schlesinger and Mayer Department Store, was groundbreaking. Designed by Louis Henry Sullivan and constructed in 1899, it combined the the technical requirements of steel frame construction with Sul- livan's characteristically flamboyant cast iron and terra cotta ornament. Sullivan's modeler for the project was Northwest Terra Cotta's Kristian Schneider. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Currently occupied by City Target, it remains a Chicago Icon.
